Sediment buildup, corroded anode rods, and failed heating elements in a water heater all look similar from the outside, and the age of the surrounding house tells a homeowner nothing about which one a contractor will find once the unit is open. Half the homes in Clark County, South Dakota were built in 1957 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A system running in housing that old has likely been replaced at least once, but the parts a given unit takes may be scarce or discontinued, and that is what shapes the repair scope and the bill.

The Parts of a Water Heater a Contractor Checks During a Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, a kitchen and bathroom fixtures, a large cylindrical water heater with a tall flue pipe rising through the dark shingled roof.

The tank is the piece most homeowners recognize, a large insulated vessel that sits in a utility room, garage, or closet and holds the supply of hot water the house draws from. Attached to it are the pressure relief valve, which opens if pressure inside climbs too high, and the anode rod, a metal rod suspended inside the tank that draws corrosion to itself instead of the tank walls. When a repair call comes in, these are among the first things a contractor looks at.

At the base of the tank sits the burner assembly on a gas unit, or the heating elements on an electric one, and these are what actually raise the water temperature. The thermostat sits nearby and tells that heat source when to fire and when to stop. Supply and discharge pipes connect the tank to the rest of the house, and the flue or exhaust vent carries combustion gases out on gas-fired models.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines which of them applies to the specific unit and installation in your home.
