Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A basement interior with a gray electrical panel mounted on a concrete block wall, a galvanized sheet metal duct and conduit pipes running vertically, and a wooden shelf holding empty glass canning jars and cardboard boxes.

Plumbing runs and electrical supply in much of this housing were put in for equipment that no longer exists. Half the homes in Gregory County, South Dakota were built in 1963 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor opening a water heater in a house this age has to establish what the unit actually is before a repair can be scoped, because the parts some of these systems require have been out of production long enough that sourcing them changes the job entirely. That determination shapes whether a repair is viable at all.

The Parts of a Water Heater a Contractor Checks During a Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house with a dark shingled roof, showing a cylindrical water heater with a flue pipe running through the roof, plus kitchen counters, a sink, a bathtub and cabinets inside.

The tank is the centerpiece of the system, a large insulated vessel that sits in a utility closet, garage, or basement and holds water at a set temperature. The burner assembly or heating element sits at or near the base of the tank and is what actually raises the water temperature. When hot water runs short or arrives lukewarm, these are the pieces a contractor looks at first.

The thermostat mounts on the outside of the tank and tells the heating element or burner when to fire. The pressure relief valve attaches to the side or top of the tank and opens if internal pressure climbs too high. The anode rod runs vertically through the tank interior and slows corrosion of the tank walls.

The drawing shows a typical water heater layout, and a licensed contractor determines which parts apply to the specific unit and setup in your home.
